HydroStar drives a diverse portfolio of innovation projects focused on advancing technologies across the hydrogen value chain - including production, storage, purification, and compression. With a strong commercial focus, many of these projects are actively delivering cross-sector solutions.

WASTEWATER TO GREEN HYDROGEN

Current electrolysers require highly purified water as feedstock and utilise rare metals within the design, affecting real world operational and manufacturing constraints.

 

This project focusses on utilising impurified-water, e.g. rainwater, storm-overflow and industrial process wastewater as feedstock, which reduces operational constraints and costs for customers whilst enabling widescale uptake of low-carbon hydrogen.

In partnership with Wales & West Utilities, Welsh Water, Yeo Valley and NGED, HydroStar is spearheading two breakthrough demonstrator projects to revolutionise hydrogen production and distribution.

MICRO- & NANOPLASTIC MITIGATION FOR GREEN HYDROGEN

HydroStar is proactively safeguarding green-hydrogen production from micro- and nanoplastic contamination. In partnership with Cardiff Catalysis Institute under the South Wales Launchpad programme, we are engineering an advanced flocculation-coagulation system that eliminates these pollutants before electrolysis.

Our in-house specialists also conduct on-site microplastic assessments. Recent work with Caerphilly County Borough Council led to a mobile “Smart-Space” laboratory that will expand testing and pave the way for a future on-site green-hydrogen facility.

OPTIMISING BIOMETHANE PRODUCTION

HydroStar is partnering with leading AD operator Ixora Energy on an innovative project aimed at boosting biomethane yields from anaerobic digestion (AD) by injecting green hydrogen at key stages of the process. This approach targets higher conversion of CO₂ to biomethane, reducing impurities and the need for costly gas scrubbing and propanation.

 

With over 20 biomethane injection points already active across the Wales & West Utilities network, this project builds on proven infrastructure and aims to deliver a scalable, low-carbon solution that supports the UK’s Net Zero and energy security goals. By improving efficiency and reducing costs, the project strengthens the role of biomethane as a practical, grid-ready renewable energy source.
